Bio

Beginning in production at WGBH-TV in 1970 Marita Rivero moved into public broadcasting management positions in 1980 encompassing live events, electronic and digital media. Her life’s work has been to capture our stories, often untold, to help us find one another across our differences.

Her noteworthy national television projects include Africans in America, a History of Slavery and This Far By Faith, as well as digital channel WORLD. Rivero launched the daily international radio news program The World. She served as VP and GM for Radio and Television, WGBH, Boston; Vice President for Radio at WPFW-Pacifica, DC., and President and CEO, Museum of African American History, Boston | Nantucket.

Marita Rivero received the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce’s Pinnacle Award, the MWPC Abigail Adams Tribute Award, the YWCA Women Achievers Award, among other noteworthy community and professional awards that include Peabody, Columbia DuPont and Emmy awards, regional NABJ Journalist of the Year award, New England NATAS Silver Circle induction.

She served on the NPR Board, PRI Board, and as Board Chair of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. She joined the Board of the Greater Boston Convention and Visitors Bureau in 2019, having served other local boards, including as Board Chair of Bunker Hill Community College, the Urban League, YWCA-DC, Kokrobitey Institute, Ghana. Nationally, she chaired Black Public Media and radio’s National Federation of Community Broadcasters. Her interview for HistoryMakers was entered into the National Archives.
